Spring Roadrtrip Day 4, A Day in Delaware

 Day 4

Monday 3/4/2024

Unless it's raining, whenever I'm on the coast, I'll drag myself up and go out for sunrise.  Some days you get a line of orange on the horizon.  Some days you get a full on light show.  But, you never know until you start walking out.

From the street adjacent to the hotel...

Walking across the dunes to the beach...

Not a bad way to start the day.

I've been to this part of Delaware a few times over the years.  I was looking for something different to do.  A Google search for trails near me offered a few ideas.  The first was a loop around Lake Gerar.

The loop turned out to be a lot shorter than I expected.  So, I did it four times(about a half hour) and moved on.

I had better luck on my second stop, though it wasn't easy to find.  My GPS kept trying to take me through a private community, complete with guardhouse.

The trail out and back is only a mile and a half.  It's well cared for and a really nice walk.

The end of the trail is this overlook.  The left side is designed to be wheelchair accessible.

A few years ago, I walked across the street from the hotel here for sunset.  That's where I met Daphney.  We wound up having dinner that night and have gotten together every time I pass through.  Today, we were meeting for lunch.

As always, it was great chatting and catching up.  I know she liked finding trails, too.  So, I asked what she knew about the Angola Neck Nature Preserve.    Daphney had never heard of it.  Having the afternoon off, we decided to go off exploring together.

There's a pullout for perhaps four cars.  The dirt road is narrow enough to cause problems for the people who live alongside the preserve.  One woman was out walking her dog and told us it's really bad in the summer when people are looking for a quiet beach.

There's only one trail and it really doesn't go very far.

While the trail was short, the company was welcome.  In the end, we walked back to our cars and spent another hour just shooting the breeze and watching the clouds roll in.  The expected rain was due shortly, so we decided to call it a day.
