New England Day 15, A Day in Southbury

 Day 15

Friday, October 22, 2021

The original plan was to drive out to Rhode Island and visit my friend Rosemary.  She called while I was a few days out and had to cancel. Karen and Paul were gracious and offered the guest room for another night.

They both had to work, so I was off to explore.  I wound up spending the day in the greater Southford area, about a half hour to the east.  The first stop of the day, Southford Falls State Park.  There's a loop trail through the woods that passes by a waterfall, a covered bridge and a small lake.  What's not to like.

It's not far down the trail to the Burr Arch Covered Bridge.

Eventually, you'll come to another observation tour.  At least this one was tall enough to see over the trees.

Graffiti, complete with corrections on a tower support.  My apologies if the song gets stuck in your head.

The loop eventually brings you back to the lake...

Second stop of the day was in Kettletown State Park, just up the road.

After lunch, I found one of the access points for the Larkin Trail, a ten miles rail trail between Southbury and Naugatuck.  The New York and New England Railroad operated on this former track until 1939.  Dr. Charles Larkin bought this ten mile stretch and turned it over to the state, for an equestrian trail.

I have no idea how far I walked.  At forty minutes, I simply turned around and headed back to the car.  Of course there was still time to stop into the Black Hog Brewery for a quick pint or two.

Back to Karen and Paul's place for a delicious dinner and another night of just hanging out together, along with their dogs who had decided I really was a friend.

Coming Up,

Logan Airport, the long way
