February Roadtrip Day 3...One Giant Sloth

Day 3

Sunday, February 5, 2023

Thinking of the previous day's sunrise surprise, the phone alarm was actually a welcome sound.  The gaggle of photogs weren't there, just a smattering.  It was all understandable considering the cloud cover.  While there was no sunrise through the pier, it was still worth coming out for.

There are plenty of places in the Savannah area I still haven't explored.  Today, I decided to tackle one of them, Skidaway Island State Park.  There are plenty of places to camp and RV inside the park.  I was there for the six miles of hiking trails.

Inside the visitor center, there's the skeleton of a Giant Ground Sloth.  The skeleton was first discovered in 1822, much to the surprise of archaeologists who though they only lived in South America.  And yeah, it's pretty damn big.  They also estimate it ate six hundred pounds of vegetation daily.

The day's hiking would involve three loops and one trail connecting them all.  It begins with a walkway over the salt marsh.

A short trail spur to the observation tower and the view...

On the far end of the biggest loop trail are some old earthworks dating back to the Civil War.  The purpose was to guard the waterways.  They were abandoned early 1862.  Robert E. Lee had been placed in charge of Savannah's defense and decided they were far too remote to do any real good.

There's one brewery in Savannah I hadn't hit yet.  The Service Brewing Company doesn't have food.  But, there was a convenient hot dog vendor out front.  Nice friendly guy.  As for the brewery, decent enough place.  I tried a flight of four again and enjoyed it.  But, parking is certainly a challenge.

One downside about this time of year, the afternoon gets away from you quite easily.  With sunset at 6P, it was time to head back to the beach.

Round one of sunset was just your typical orange sky...

There are nights where you just know this is it.  You can pack it up and head home.  But, the long, thin clouds over the ocean left plenty of potential for a second round.
