Utah, Day 13...Getting Lucky in a Sand Cave

 Friday, September 13, 2024

Today, I was headed further south towards the Arizona border and the town of Kanab.  I stayed there last year for a different reason.  More on that later.

On the drive west from Bryce Canyon, I stopped for a quick hike up Buckhorn Trail.  It's a steady mile climb, but worth it!  And a great way to start the day.

Multiple reviews  said the same thing, don't do this on a windy day.

From there, a rather uneventful drive south to Kanab.

Last year, I took the trail north of Kanab to a place called the Sand Cave.  It's those holes in the rock face, near the top.

Last year I watched a few groups having a really hard time both headed up and back down.  I didn't go up.  This time, there was no stopping me.
Watching a large group headed down.

I knew I couldn't punk out again this time.  So, up I went.  That's the entrance.

A family was up exploring when I got there.  When they left, I suddenly found I had the place to myself.  Bonus!

Of course, then there was the inevitable hike back down.  Fortunately, it looked more harrowing than it was.

Two more stops for the afternoon.  First, the BLM office.  I had wanted to know more about a place called Buckskin Gulch.  I had heard stories about the road out to the trailhead, and the gulch itself.
The good news, it was freshly graded...yesterday.  Bonus, rain is in the forecast, but not until Sunday.
Next stop, the roadtrip necessity... laundry.  Watching the wash machine do its thing and not too sure how efficient it is.
My home for the night was the historic Parry Lodge in Kanab.  Interesting place.
The main building dates back to 1892, with the lodge opening in 1931.  It used to be a big thing back when movies were still being shot outside of town.

    My room...the Tim Conway Suite.

It's always nice to find you've got an additional living room to stretch out in.
And of course there were Tim Conway movie posters on the walls.
