Knowing my schedule was pretty tight, I had the room mostly packed the night before. On the way out to the beach, I took a couple of bags out to the car. From the hotel’s parking deck, I could already see this was going to be a spectacular sunrise.
Sunrise over Dewey Beach, Delaware. Yeah, one of THOSE sunrises!
There's just something about a sunrise like this one. It puts a spin on the day that's hard to beat. My only regret, I couldn't stick around to see the sun come up over the horizon. I had a date with a ferry.
Back to the room to grab a really quick bite from the breakfast room, then off to Lewes again for the morning ferry. My ticket said they could give away my spot if I wasn’t there and checked in a half hour ahead of time.
Once you’re checked in, you’re told where to line up your car. A couple of guys in uniform walk dogs up and down the rows looking for who knows what. Seemingly at random, they asked a few people to pop their trunks. No bags were opened though. There’s even a guy with an angled mirror close too the ground, looking under the cars just before we drove on.
I've taken the ferry to Cape May, NJ a few times, but don't remember seeing a tractor trailer on board. Looking down from above, they appeared to only have about six inches clearance.
Coming into New Jersey...
While I certainly enjoyed the leisurely drive up the coast, I wasn’t expecting to pull into Ocean City as early as I did. I found Biscayne Suites and they let me in nice and early. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the room to find a full living room, kitchen and a balcony overlooking a residential neighborhood. Nor too shabby. The choice was purely random. This time of year, many motels are simply closed.
With no plans for the day, it was a two block stroll to Ocean City’s boardwalk. Sure, the shore season was long over, but it still felt weird, almost like a ghost town...
In the summer, there would be the sounds of people talking, playing games of chance as well as the noises associated with video arcades. In my youth, I could easily lose a few dollars in quarters here. Much to my surprise, one was still open.
Definitely not the Space Invaders I grew up with...
The old school pinball machines were in the back and they're still only a quarter. Sure, the flippers were a little weak and not all the features worked, but it was still fun to play again.
In the far distance, Atlantic City. Been there, done that. Once you get off the boardwalk and
away from the casinos, it's a bit depressing. Many promises were made to the city to bring them in,
most of them still remain unfulfilled.
Coming Up,
Some New Jersey History
