Chicago, Day 2...Walking the City

Saturday, July 1, 2023

Chicago

Today was Day One of the NASCAR in Chicago event.  Fortunately, the road closures were all well south of the hotel.  I could have walked there.  I just chose not to.  For those of you familiar with the city, here's the race route.

A band of rain was expected in about two hours, so I didn't wander too far.

Breakfast was simply bagel with egg and cheese.  For some odd reason I felt compelled to go inside here.

The view over breakfast...   That's the city's old water tower.

A light rain was beginning as I left the donut shop.  The silver lining, raindrops on the flowers...

I've walked by the Fourth Presbyterian Church numerous times.  The lines and the ivy get me every time.

When you walk through those arches and into the courtyard, the steady drone of traffic is replaced by chirping birds.

I hung out at the room for an hour or so while the rain ended, posting the above pictures.  From there, I had five hours until I had to start thinking about heading uptown to meet some friends for dinner.

With nowhere specific to be, I just started walking west towards the river...

Imagine a world where all our cities had these...

When you see it...

Apparently, guided kayak tours within the city are a relatively new thing.

This guy was playing some seriously righteous blues.  The woman on the right was dancing her hearted out.  Her dog, just chillin'.

The rain started about the time to head out to dinner.  Grace and Tom picked me up by the hotel and we drove up to a pizza place called Oven Grinders.  Imagine this, the sauce and fillings are placed in a small ceramic bowl, with the dough on top.  It arrives at your table looking like a giant mushroom.  They flip in onto your plate and remove the ceramic bowl.  Really good.

And as always, great to see old friends again!

Sunset once again from the street in front of the hotel...

Chicago doesn't do their fireworks on the 4th.  A short walk from the hotel to Lakeside Drive and I settled in...
