Roadtrip Day 1, Atlan'a to Columbia

Day 1

Sunday, May 18, 2025

There wasn't all that much driving to do today, so no need to get out too early.  Besides, then I'd be traveling into the sun as I traveled east.

So, I planned on a 9A departure.  With the car packed, travel mug of coffee ready, I was good to go.  Hearing the rumble outside, I contemplated waiting.  Since the storm and myself were both headed east, I just left.  Why wait and drive right into it. In the end it was a  few flashes of lightning.  Nothing too bad.

I had looked for hiking trails along the way and found a municipal park in Grovetown with a series of paved trails.  The longest was just .9 miles.  All three combined would be just under two miles.  I had time, going around again a  second  time would have been easy.

It wasn't actually raining when I started the loop trail around the old quarry.

At the back side of the loop, the first raindrops started falling.

By the time I arrived back at the trail juncture, it was a light, steady rain.  The weather guessers said another hour of this, so I left and drove on into South Carolina.
Thinking lunch, I decided to try out a new brewery in Aiken.  With a name like Good Girl Brewing, it had to be good.

  On the brewery walls...

The Chicken Parm sandwich was pretty good.  The beer...excellent.
Adjacent to the brewery sits a city park with soccer and baseball fields.  There's a walking path that circumnavigates all of it.  After that lunch, it felt good to be walking.
And after the morning rain, it felt even better to just drive with the windows open.

I've driven by countless churches over the years and seen pretty much every version of "God Loves You."   This just struck me as being super casual.  Something a Reverend Buddy might say.

Eventually, I did make it to Columbia, South Carolina and my home for the night, La Quinta Inn.

The place is being renovated floor by floor.  The top floor was recently reopened.  The nice woman at the desk gave me Room 525.
Neither of the keys worked in the door.  They gave me two more. They didn't work, either.
So, she tried again and came up with me.  She couldn't make it work, either.  She even brought a hand held device and plugged it into the bottom of the door.  Still couldn't make it work.  So, I wound up across the hall in 524.
Perfectly fine room.  But, this was the first fridge without a freezer.  Just seemed odd.
Seen on the drive to the motel...

A block up is as small restaurant chain named Rush's.  It's your basic family style burger place.   I was tempted by the name, but passed.

      Sunset from the motel...
