California Day 10, So Very Dry

Day 10

Monday August 24

Considering how stiff pretty much everything was this morning, I decided to take it easy and do a relatively shorter, easier trail to Mirror Lake.

From the parking lot, it’s probably a good half mile to the trailhead.  The road in between is closed to cars. Easy enough.  The trail itself is mostly just a walk through the woods, accompanied by gnats.

Mirror Lake was formed by a rock slide that partially dammed the river.  Up until recently, the Park Service has been dredging it from time to time.  Recently, the decision was made to let nature have its way.  It didn’t matter today.  The lake was bone dry.  You can get an idea what it looks like with water here.

My hiking guidebook suggested continuing another mile up the trail, crossing a bridge and coming back along the other side of the lake.  Another two miles seemed fine to me.

I never did find the bridge.  Nor did I find the trail off to the left.  The first signpost told me I had gone much further than I thought, so I turned around.

Yeah, a pretty short day, but my body was protesting after the previous day’s climb, and I knew I had a big day ahead of me.
