California Day 13, Closed, No Detour

Day 13

Thursday August 27

One of the reasons for coming to Carmel by the Sea is Hwy 1, the Pacific Coast Highway.  The plan for Friday was to drive it down the coast.  There were even a half dozen interesting stops along the way.  But, the Dolan Fire closed a long stretch of the highway thirty miles south of here.  According to the San Lius Obispo Tribune, the fire has burned 30,000 acres as of this writing.

While it was gray and overcast in Carmel, the weather guessers were calling for blue sky a few miles south.  So, if I can’t drive all the way down the coast, I’d drive the thirty miles and find a place to turn around.  At least I would get to enjoy some of it.

The morning was gray and overcast.

But eventually to the Rocky Creek Bridge.

The bridge itself was great, but I started noting the ground cover on the hillsides was in bloom or going through an autumnal color change.

As I drove south, the clouds started breaking up and the sun finally came out...

I continued south as far as I could.  There were more signs reading “Staging Area” and “Assembly Point.”  Judith Pfeiffer Burns State Park is closed .  That’s where the fire crews are staying as they fight the Dolan Fire.  Shortly past the park, there’s the barricade.

South of the Rocky Creek Bridge is the more famous Bixby Creek Bridge.  Funny how different everything looked in the sunlight.

Back in downtown, I ditched the car and just started walking around.  Here's one of those
restaurants using heir parking spots for seating.

By now you now I can’t pass up a craft brewery for lunch.  There are two here in Carmel. One serves only beer.  The other serves food, too.  I kept walked up to the Alvarado Brewing Company and settled into their patio.  Morgan couldn’t have been nicer and the beer selection plentiful.

Back to the beach for another gray sunset.
